(Video) John Yoo speech disrupted at Johns Hopkins Univ – Va. campus next
Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, 2010, John Yoo, torture memo author, gave a talk on the campus of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Before the controversial law professor could get into his talk, however, it was interrupted by two activists.
They stood to his right in front of the auditorium and held a banner, which read: "Try Yoo for Torture!" (See video below)
The protesters refused to sit down, but were not arrested. They remained in the same position during Yoo’s entire speech.
Yoo served in the administration of Bush-Cheney in the Justice Department. He authored two dubious legal memos which claimed sweeping presidential power to commit torture.
The two memos are referred to by his critics–and there are many–as the "torture memos."
The Obama adminstrations’ Justice Department has "rebuked" but not disbarred the torture memo authors lawter Yoo and Judge Jay Bybee.
President Obama has banned torture but has not supported the prosecution of Bush administration officials involved in torture that officials choose to call "enhanced interrogation techniques."
"Justice Department lawyers have an obligation to uphold the law, so when they write legal opinions that were designed to provide legal cover for torture, they need to be held accountable with more than a slap on the wrist,” said Andrea Prasow, senior counterterrorism counsel at Human Rights Watch. "Despite failing to find the former Justice Department lawyers responsible for misconduct, the Justice Department report nevertheless provides strong evidence indicating that the authors of these legal opinions should be investigated for their role in facilitating torture.” (Brad Knickerbocker, The Christian Science Monitor; Torture memo authors: Rebuked but won’t be disbarred; Feb 20, 2010)
