Oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General

Submitted by Bryan Buchan on 1-8-2009 – 2:51 pmComments

By Quentin D. Young, M.D. | Physicians for a National Health Program

The report this week that President-elect Obama is considering Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent, for the position of U.S. surgeon general is deeply troubling.

Among our concerns are these:

1. He has very little background in public health, preventive medicine or administration.

2. He has openly opposed progressive health reform, going so far as to cite false information to denigrate single payer (e.g. in his error-laden attack on Michael Moore’s film “Sicko”) and parroting the health insurance lobby’s distortions of single payer.

3. As a media figure, he has been disturbingly cozy with Big Pharma. He co-hosts Turner Private Networks’ monthly show “Accent Health,” which airs in doctors’ offices around the country and which serves as a major conduit for targeted ads from the drug companies. Another example: In 2003, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, he publicly downplayed concerns about the dangers of Vioxx. It was removed from the market a year later by its manufacturer, Merck.

4. In the 2008 election campaign, his reporting on John McCain’s health proposals was misleading and implicitly positive, giving undeserved credence to McCain’s claims that buying private health insurance on the open market is a financially viable option for most Americans.

We urge you to write to President-elect Obama and express your opposition to Gupta’s possible nomination, and to urge Obama to nominate a more acceptable candidate for this critically important post. You can do so by clicking here: http://change.gov/page/s/healthcare.

Sincerely yours,

Should an Emory doctor become Surgeon General?
Incredibly, in the midst of all of this, a friend of Nemeroff is being considered! Sanjay Gupta appeared before the very same “conflicts of interest” committee, and his conflicts were supposedly allowed while a faculty member at Emory.
    What gives?
  • alain samoun
I oppose Gupta nomination as surgeon general
  • Kathleen Major
What an absurd appointment. Why not appoint Dr. Howard Dean! He helped Obama win.
  • Niehauskh
I oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General.
  • tony
I oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General. This tv analyst is not suited to be in this position. Find someone who is not involved with the media. CNN with Gupta and Blitzer are a joke. Michael Moore exposed their phoney journalism when Blitzer interview Moore. Michael Moore is the working man's hero. " GOOPDA" is a joke. SIcko movie by Moore was right on. America , start listening to Moore.
  • Penny
I am against Dr. Gupta's possible nomination as Surgeon General.
  • Olivia
President Obama..You are a smart man. Healthcare is one of the biggest issues. Please re-think your choice.
  • Gemma
We need a surgeon general not only with a strong background in medicine, but understands the flaws of our current healthcare system and works to turn it around for the benefit of the American people. We also need an individual that will educate people about preventive medicine and proper nutrition to avoid less disease. We cannot let insurance companies dictate and have control over our health any longer. After the attacks Dr.Gupta made about Michael Moores film "Sicko" I feel he would not be good candidate for the position of general surgeon. He clearly does not believe in healthcare reform, and will get caught up with the politics in Washington.
  • Thelma
    Very well said. Thanks.
  • Ben Middleton
I do not want to see Dr.Gupta to be our surgeon general mr. Obama. get someone who isn't involved in the media.
  • Thelma
I saw M M 's movie Sicko and he did America a great service by opening our eyes to what could be for our great country.
I'm not in favor of Sanjay Gupta for this most important position which will take very hard work to get this Nation back on
track. I also think that Howard Dean would be super! He is spot on as to our needs and a big thanks to all his hard work
on this very important race we just had.
  • nelly baldan badia
What is the reason for this choice?
    I am totally against it.
  • Lynn Mortimer
I supported and campaigned for Obama but am very disappointed with the appointment of Sanjay Gupta for surgeon general. He is more concerned with his celebrity status than doing what is right for the average working American. He proved this with his inaccurate smears of Michael Moore regarding his movie Sicko
  • heidi p
We need someone better than Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General. We need STRONG and PROGRESSIVE leadership, not a celebrity.
  • JT
I am certainly opposed to Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General but not because of his lack of experience. He has a large conflict of interest in that he is an employee of one sort or another of CNN. The Surgeon General has the job of explaining health concerns to the US public at large and print and broadcast media are the organs he uses to achieve that goal. Wouldn't Dr. Gupta be giving preference to his associates at CNN or at least likely to do such?
  • Ann
I took an intense dislike to Dr. Gupta during the Michael Moore interview where he appeared as an elitist snob, unfamiliar with the needs of those on the bottom tier and intent on making Moore uncomfortable. As we all know now, and knew then, he was wrong. Find someone who "gets it," maybe a doctor working with an NGO somewhere where many people are in desperate need just as they are all over the US.
  • bob roys
I oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General.
  • AngRod3
I am a big supporter of Pres. Elect Obama...however, I am highly
disappointed in his consideration of Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General.

I believe it's well past time to focus on National Healthcare and stop
    the exploitation of wanna-be celebrities...insert Gupta here...from further media attention;
and, furthermore, let's finally put an end to all of the never-ending, guzzling insurance companies
    who pride themselves on stripping our society of what it rightly deserves...firstly, prompt & proper care;
rightly, a sense of good health & self; and, lastly but justly, a peace of mind!

Let a real dr...and, by 'real'...I mean, a highly qualified, an experienced and loyal, non-butt-kissing doctor
who's not afraid to get some balls and nurse our country back to health...PLEASE!

And, last but certainly not least, many thanks to Michael Moore for all
of his hard work especially in regards to SICKO...too bad he's
not a dr. as I certainly think he would make a good candidate
    for this position. Just saying...
  • carly
No CNN moonies for Surgeon General. No to Gupta.
  • debra alkin
youve GOT TO BE KIDDING!!! PLEASE DONT APPOINT HIM
  • Rob
I thought you were the candidate for Change? I supported you on that claim and even made free YouTube videos/commercials for you for the election race. First Hillary, and now this? Sounds like the same old status quo to me.
  • Summer Corrie
We belive in you, Barack. Please do right by us.
  • Cathy
WTF!? I thought that the appointing of people totally unqualified would end with king george!
  • Barbara Macdonald
As former member of medical profession (R.N.) I am unimpressed. There are far more preventive opportunities in Complimentary Medicine and this man has not opened his eyes to see them.
It is time for change to happen with single-payer, too.
  • wendy crim
I oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General. Another bad pick by Obama. I've had enough. Those of us that worked so hard for Obama have run out of ways to defend him. No Gupta. Thank you. Wendy Crim, citizen
  • steve
This would be a poor choice
  • Johnny
Isn't it enough that nearly all national news outlets are bought and paid for by big business and in cahoots with the government? Now the government wants to recruit from these sesspools. I strongly object to the appointment of medical TV personality, Sanjay Gupta.
  • Jenny S.
We need public health care for ALL. Dr. Gupta will do all he can to prevent this. If Barack Obama nominates this man, he will go back on his promise for health care for Americans. OPPOSE DR. GUPTA!!!!
  • Yvette Bolivar
I will change my mind if he acknowledges that Michael Moore was correct and apologizes for his statements about "Sicko". Otherwise, he should not be rewarded for helping insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
  • Robert Sanchez
Best to have him stick to playing a Doctor on TV.
  • Billy E Smith
If Dr. Gupta's unsupported attack on Michael Moore's "SICKO," is an example of the kind of information we can expect from him as U.S. surgeon general, then, we DO NOT NEED HIM in that position. PLEASE appoint an honest person.
  • Sue
I don't see any credentials or quakifications for him to become surgeon general of this country
  • Sean Sardari, CPE
He erroneously claimed that ‘Sicko’ was fudging the facts and is against universal healthcare for America. He is the WRONG choice.
  • Wakien
Sure he looks good on tv..but it takes more than that to be a great Surgeon General..
He has appossed medical marijuana, which in itself is heartbreaking for the thousands of people this herb could help.
I have personnal seen it help a sick man of six foot tall that was down to 101 lbs....gain his appitite and bring his weight back up to 160 lbs just by the use of this herb. I have seen people that lay dying in pain and agony, get relief. As I worked in health care for many years I have also seen cancer patients end their vomiting problems with this herb. What kind of dr apposses something so helpful to patients? Dont we want a Surgeon General that cares about ALL the people?
We can do better than this and it is far overdue.
  • Christopher Head
He is part of the problem and against the solution for comprehensive healthcare for all Americans
  • Andrew Foertsch
After seeing him try to blow off Michael Moore when he knew he was wrong and having seen evidence of his cozy relationship with corporate medicine I have little confidence in him as someone who can help the American people.
  • Joyce Johnson
Dear Pres. Elect Obama, I strongly oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General. We need progressive healthcare reform now. Very disappointed.
  • Jack Kennedy
Why appoint someone who's opposed to a proper State Health Care programme?
  • Dr. David Bates
Dr. Gupta is not well-suited for this position. He has expressed quite clearly that he does not support national health care, and he is too closely involved with corporate interests, which generally conflict with the interest of public health.
  • Jared Mancuso
    No to Gupta.
  • Alex Black, M.D.
SANJAY GUPTA is nothing other than a SHILL ... and a JOKE.

What use has this man made of his medical training ... other
than to parlay same into a spot on (the least trusted name
in NEWS) = CNN ?? His opinions are always driven by
what his "handlers" tell him. He has done segments on CNN
that would make Weird Al Yankovic BLUSH = due to their
loony content (Such as the "fire eating" episode).

THIS IS A RESPECTABLE DOCTOR ????

President-Elect Obama = DO rethink this idea; I realize that MISTER Gupta
has not been "appointed" yet ... and is only a CHOICE you may (or may
    not) be seriously considering.

THIS country deserves better than such as GUPTA = even his name
makes me laugh ... but his close ties with Corporations make me
want to regurgitate. Alex Black, M.D. Physicians for Change, NV
  • cgomez
    President Obama,
Please review the interview Sanjay had with Michael Moore..which later proved that Sanjay had LIED about many of the facts in SICKO..have you seen SICKO?If not,I am sure MIchael can get you a copy!
  • Joe
This Guy is obviously a puppet for corporate drug dealers and deranged "Health Insurance " providers.
I would rather see Anderson Cooper in that position.
  • Deborah Breen
I would like to see a Surgeon General who has spent more time "in the field" around the world rather than face time on CNN.
  • bt
Michael Moore is an idiot. I'm in favor of Mr. Gupta becoming surgeon general.
  • ava bullock
I oppose Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General.
  • Bill Gannon
My comment is simple. Gupta's a corporate hack! I say no appointment for the spineless Gupta.
  • Carmen Boutet Schellinger
It is imperative to search for a more experienced physician who can advocate for the need of the people he/she is representing
  • Ron Morrison
Sanjay Gupta has a real problem telling the truth when it interferes with his corporate buddies who employed him. We do not need another lackey for the corporations. This country has suffered greatly for putting liars in top government jobs. Enough is enough; put someone who is qualified and not beholding to the corporations.
  • Kim
I oppose Dr. Sanjay Gupta for U.S. surgeon general.
  • We favor universal single payor healthcare and therefore oppose the appointment of Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General.
  • WIlliam Murphy
Please appose Sanjay Goupta for surgeon general.
  • mjexcels
Guptas promotion of Mercks cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil, without disclosing the financial arrangements between CNN and Merck leaves me to believe he is not interested in protecting our health but more interested in lining his pockets. Twenty-seven girls have already died from this vaccine! 27 girls!!!! How many more have to die before we take better precautions? We need a surgeon general who is truly interested in the health and well being of people not the financial viability of the pharmaceutical industry.
  • hakirene
No to a Doc. whose salary is paid by CNN and big pharmaceuticals. Please consider Howard Dean, whose record for general health care in Vermont speaks for itself.
  • Sebastian B.
Wrong guy, Mr. Obama. Pick someone who isnt just a pretty face for the position. Sanjay is a puppet for the health insurance mobsters. So far, at the rate he's going with his appointments, he might as well add Sir Mix-Alot to the team. At least there I'll see the some of the Change he promised.
  • M. Miller
Surely there is someone with a more well rounded background and education, who sees the desperate need to take the PROFIT MOTIVE out of the HEALTH CARE business... and who is on the side of the millions of people who are without access to good health care. How about a woman or any other person besides BIG BIZ GUPTA !!!
  • Melissa Battaglia
I oppose Dr. Gupta and his big pharma pals!
  • Joe Scamman
For the love of God, this is a government of the people by the people for the people not special interests, corporations and lobbyists. Can't you see that this graft and corruption is going to destroy us all rich and poor. What's your lobbyist chums going to say when it all hits the fan. Why don't we take the time and do the right thing before it is too late.
  • Yewande Sanya
I oppose Gupta nomination as surgeon general
  • Scott Conley
This is a bad choice. Please get us off to a better start than this.
  • Charles Spear
We all know just what kind of lying sack of crap this corporate whore really thinks and will do to the American people.
  • Jon
I object to Dr. Gupta's appointment given his lack of appriate experience and his poorly considered attack on Sicko which demonstrated to me an attitude and ignorance I feel is grossly inapproriate for the office of Surgeon General of the United States. Very disappointing and not a change I believe in, just another video pez dispenser for the corporate line.
  • L Diablo
I guess those of us who voted for NADER can laugh at you now Moore. Lol. Obama is another corporate Democrat with ZERO interest in the left. Enjoy the results of your election Mike... lol.
  • J
I'm a big Fan of Michael Moore's Films, however I have to respectfully disagree with his outrage over this possible appointment of Gupta. The Surgeon General isn't even involved in policy, he's more of a public health figure head. Health care policy will be determined by Obama and congress, not Gupta, So it doesn't matter what he thinks. As for Gupta's "Attacks" on Moore's film, I watched it and the Larry King argument and it seems very much like Moore was making it seems worse than it is. Gupta disagrees with Moore about some thing but agreed with him on others, Gupta had a difference of opinion about where the facts came from and just wanted americans to know that while free health care can be a good thing that Moore's film Sicko failed to mention how free healthcare work (how it's paid for and what is covered). I don't think Gupta meant to call out Moore as some sort of Liar, he just disagreed with him and he did so with civility, while Moore went off on him on live tv. I think Moore has a right to feel personally bothered by the CNN report, but I think it was made into a bigger deal than it should be. We have no idea what Gupta will do as surgeon General, but what I do know is that Obama is President and he will be calling the shots, not his cabinet or staff, so if you believe in Obama than people need to lay off and let him build his administration how he wants it. He's trying to bring together a variety of people for his staff, including people he may not agree with, which is smart, because the last thing we need is a president surrounded by "Yes Men". We need one that is willing to listen to all sides and make an informed decision. So if you all have VALID complaints against Gupta, ones that make it obvious that he is not up for the responsibilities of this job, then by all means, Voice them, But if this is just about Moore and Gupta's feud, than this is a big waste of time and should be handled between the two of them. I'm honestly bothered that Moore has taken this issue public and made it such a spectacle. He normally does good work and speaks out about doing the right thing, but I think he's taking a personal matter too far this time.
  • Steve
    Mike,

After your highly publicized confrontation with Gupta and CNN, I guess Obama is simply letting you know where you stand. Gupta shouldn't have claimed you "Fudged the Facts". It was certainly a distortion of the truth. He later revised it to "Cherry Picking" the facts, which to me has a completely different connotation. (I think you made a great argument for the sources you chose.) The story on SICKO revealed CNN and Gupta as a group of Hacks. It bothers me though, that you only took issue with CNN when they victimized you. They certainly did a job on Hillary Clinton and you fell right in line. (Even as an Obama supporter, the bias against Clinton on CNN turned by stomach. All stories on CNN are rife with commentary, sarcasm and innuendo ) I'm to the left, but I can't stand watching CNN's biased reporting on a daily basis - even when the story is supporting my own views. Everything they do is tilted in one direction. They're the Left version of FOX. We have no where to turn for objective reporting.

Bottom line: Gupta is a poor choice for surgeon general, but It must signal Obama's plans for Health Care, and we'll all have to just get used to it.
  • Is this all you could think of to mobalize people to direct action? This is perhaps the most undiscplined and weak maneveur to create some form of change. What we need, and what will work, as this is my area of expertise is the mobalization of strategically nonviolent action- not on politicos, but on those who's intrests rest in this issue.
  • carla tevelow
Let's begin with integrity as being one of the important traits needed for appointing leaders in prominent positions.
  • NoGupta
You can bet your sweet Dupa that Gupta is getting major funding from the pharmie companies! They are one of the most corrupt greedy bastages. There are so many cures that have been "Shelved", because their only interested in keeping America Sick.
  • NoGupta
I oppose Gupta!!!! Hopefully Mr. Obama will not get sucked into a "Big Payoff" from the Corrupt Pharmie Co.!!!!
  • Emily Kresl
Do not hire Dr. Gupta or we will never see universal healthcare.
  • B. CHITTUM
PLEASE DON'T LET THIS GUY HAVE THE POSITION - HE'S CLEARLY NOT UP TO PAR...THERE ARE MANY OTHER BETTER QUALIFIED CANDIDATES OUT THERE WHO AREN'T MAINSTREAM MEDIA, HUGE MISTAKE. HE HAS WAY TOO MANY HIDDEN INTERESTS MONEY WISE. LETS GET BACK TO HEALTH FIRST...PROFIT LAST!
  • monica
    Dear President Elect,

I voted for you. I told everyone I could get to listen to vote for you. Most of my family and friends voted for you.

I don't believe in you. I think you are someone who says one thing and does another. I think that is the way of american politics and all of the politicians are on the same team. I imagine parties at each others homes and meetings in eaach others offices where you all decide together who is going to have what scandal and look like an idiot this week and who is going to look like the savior. I think it keeps us all pointing fingers at each other and falling for the circus.

Nominating Sanjay Gupta for the post of surgeon general is one point in my corner. My friends and family still take a wait and see attitude. I had hope. I was willing to go on their faith. But they aren't defending you so much as you approach your office. I've only knocked two of the people you chose to surround yourself with. One was Rubin because he deserves to live in the slums he has helped create. The other is Sanjay because he is so far in the opposite direction of where we need to go and you told us you would take us. We do not need a pharma spokesman with an MD as our surgeon general.
I had loads of hope. Some of my hope was just hoping for faith. I'm disappointed that you are living up to my expectations.
  • Susan
OK...I clicked on the change.gov/page link above to write to Obama, filled in the comment area with my letter, hit spell check and immediatle got re-directed back to a blank comment page and had to start all over again. It happened twice!!!! What's up with that?
  • Susan
I hope he does not nominate him!
  • Jerry Cox
Please, No More Phoneys! I Voted for you Mr. Obama, This pick is just plain WRONG! You can do much better!
  • Rosa Pietri
He is not qualified for that position! Been on TV makes you qualify for a position in the goverment? There a lot more persons that are more apt than him
  • The_Facilitatrix
I went to the Accent Health Website and found this on their "Custom Promotions" page:

"AccentHealth offers several in-office promotional programs that maximize your presence in the physician's office-keeping your brand message top-of mind before consumers speak to the doctor, and before they go shopping!"

    Disgusting.
  • Lucia Marano
He is a shiny mainstream media rep--not a good choice for Surgeon General...
  • Waveland
Do we really want /need another celebrity in the Obama list of players
  • Megan stelzer
I vehemently oppose the nomoination of Gupta.
  • Diane Noland
Aren't there better doctors than Gupta in the USA? Come on, this guy was wrong about Michael Moore's movie Sicko, for god's sake. How about the heart doc, Dr. Dean Ornish? How about the doctor Robin Williams portrayed in that movie about sick children, Dr. Patch Adams? How about Dr. Howard Dean? Dr. Nancy Snyderman? Is Deepak Chopra an MD? He's very good on preventive medicine. What about Dr. Andrew Weil? Lots of other doctors could fill that bill better.
  • Bill Sorem
We don't need this Bush level of ignorance and incompetence,
  • Joy
I oppose the appointment of Sanjay Gupta, please reconsider
