Stand Up for Women’s Rights & Human Rights Activists in Iran

from Code Pink

On Sunday December 21st, Iran shut down two human rights centers founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate and activist Shirin Ebadi without explanation or written justification. Ebadi was also taken into custody and then later released. Ebadi stated, “The collective activities of the human rights activists in Iran have angered the Iranian authorities so much that they have illegally ordered the closing down of two NGOs.”

Sign this petition to urge for President Ahmadinejad to allow the women’s and human rights centers to stay open and CODEPINK will deliver our names to the Iranian Ambassador this week.

This petition comes from CODEPINK, a wonderful friend of PDA, a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into healthcare, education and other life-affirming activities. When you sign this petition, your name will be added to CODEPINK’s mailing list, and you’ll get weekly opportunities to plant seeds of peace in your community and the wider world.

One clue to why she may have been arrested: Ebadi was championed by the National Endowment for Democracy, the people who funded coups against democratically-elected leaders in Haiti and Venezuela, and who generally promote capitalism at the expense of democracy. That doesn't mean Ebadi was a spy, of course--the NED may simply be exploiting her. But the NED taints everyone they touch.
