Conyers: Impeachment If Bush Invades Iran

Speaking on Tuesday, Rep. John Conyers said that serious legal challenges to the Bush administration would not be off the table both before the president left office and after.

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said he would pursue articles of impeachment for the president should he pursue war in Iran without Congress’ approval.

“If Bush goes into Iran, he should be impeached,” said Conyers. “And we’ve sent him a letter to that affect.”

Conyer’s office had not sent a copy of the letter to the Huffington Post at the time of this article’s publication.

The line was greeted with heavy applause by attendees at the Take Back America conference, where Conyers spoke. Later in the event, he offered even more read meat for the throng of progressive activists.

Taking questions from an attendee, Conyers offered a strong suggestion that he intends to consider legal action against Bush and Company once they leave office.

“We can win this thing and go get these guys after [they leave office],” he said.

Asked to specify on what grounds he would retroactively go after the Bush administration, Conyers asked, “Have you got a couple hours? I haven’t.”

As for why he wouldn’t pursue articles of impeachment (if he favored them so strongly) before the president’s time in the White House came to conclusion, Conyers said he worried that it would become to heavy a political issue during the election season.

“I am afraid they would raise it in the campaign, and that they will use it against us, and that we would end up getting McCain,” he said. “I would regret that for the rest of my life,” he said. “That’s the only reason. That’s a chance, I don’t know for sure, but that’s what I fear might happen.”

Conyers’s view has been, to be sure, echoed previously by other prominent Democratic figures. Sen. Joseph Biden, for example, said during a presidential debate that he personally told Bush he should be impeached if he takes the country to war with Iran. Biden also, in a Newsweek interview this past summer, suggested that Congress should be “acquiring and accumulating all the data that is appropriate for possibly bringing criminal charges against members of this administration at a later date.”

My "member of Congress" is a Bush clone! We've tried to get rid of her in my REPUBLICAN county, but alas, this county is FULL of rich, ignorant, self-serving Republicans who keep voting her back in! I am afraid I share Adfecteau's comments, as sorry as I am to see John Conyers attacked in this way... But daily I am flabbergasted at the fact that Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice/Powell/Feith/Wolfowitz, and all the rest of the neocons haven't been arrested, indicted, thrown in jail, convicted and the keys thrown away--for the rest of their lives! Daily I cry for the people of Iraq and all the lost, innocent lives--the children, the parents, the orphans left by our horrible invasion, and just people going about their daily lives--where ARE AMERICANS in all of this complicity??? Why haven't people spoken out? Why aren't there more of us enraged and DEMANDING that our representatives and senators DEMAND IMPEACHMENT??? It makes my blood BOIL to think that Bush and Cheney are going to just walk away on Jan. 20th with their bank accounts stuffed ever fuller with all the kickback oil money!! SURELY GOD HAS A PLAN FOR THEM THAT WE JUST ARE NOT PRIVY TO! This has been the most mindboggling situation--we had no just cause for going into Iraq!! Over 4,000 soldiers dead, American families ruined, families across the world ruined by the deaths of their loved ones who had to get involved in this OVERT ACTION BY AMERICA, and 4,000 is just the tip of the iceburg! Over a million dead Iraqi citizens, many more displaced and homeless, 29,000 of our soldiers wounded and many maimed for life--how much escalating mental illness will America experience as a result of these poor people trying to blend back into our society?? Recently, somebody online was getting ready to hold an interview with Bush and they asked the public to submit questions. Mine were: "How do you sleep at night? Do you have a conscience? What is your IQ? Do you even HAVE an IQ?" Bush needs to go, and he needs to go right now! Not wait for Jan. 20, or election day, or any other time in the future! Bush and Cheney need to go RIGHT NOW! THEY NEED TO BE KICKED OUT OF WASHINGTON AND SENT TO THE MOST SECURE PRISON IN AMERICA! If I could sentence them, it would be to an austere diet of water and waterboarding for the rest of their lives!
