Cindy Sheehan Helped Progressives To Define Our Identity

By Kelly Patrick Gerling

Cindy

Cindy electrified the peace movement when it needed it—early in 2005 in the middle of the occupation of Iraq. And she did much more.

She has a degree in history. This sort of background may have helped her penetrate the veils of propaganda to see that the invasion and occupation were not mere “mistakes” but were and are immoral crimes. And she did something else. Something even more important. She helped define the *identity* of those seeking a better world and better US policies.

For example, she said this in an interview with Joshua Frank:

“We need to take Hillary and [Nancy] Pelosi on to reflect true progressive antiwar values, not AIPAC or neocon values . . .”

That phrase “true progressive” is one she used many times. And her actions exemplified it. She meant the term as values that apply even beyond matters of war and peace, to how we see and shape the world. It amounts to defining a true (not fake) progressive worldview. Here is an example from an article she wrote:

” . . . true progressives have many issues that we focus rightly on: a woman’s right to have control over her own reproductive system and other human rights issues such as an end to the occupation of Palestine and the atrocities of Darfur and the Sudan.”

She is referring to Scott Ritter’s call to adopt what she called “warrior” tactics to oppose war. She said to Scott Ritter in this article published at Common Dreams:

“We won’t use the tactics of Napoleon, or your hero, Sun Tzu, we will use the tactics of our heroes: Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Her formulation of a true progressive identity is not only a politically unifying concept. It is also an essential tactic to prevent “progressive” as an identity from being co-opted by non-progressive, pro-militarist, corporate Democrats. (I’m not referring to Scott Ritter here but to groups like the DLC and its so-called “Progressive Policy Institute” which actually advocates pro-militarist policies in support of “winning the war against jihadist terrorism” not progressive policies that deal with the root causes of terrorism such as occupation.)

As someone both defining and exemplifying that which is truly progressive, she has done more than electrify and amplify a peace movement. By her clear words and courageous actions she has helped clarify and strengthen our progressive identity for politics across parties and groups—an authentic politics of worldview and of values, not merely a party seeking power.

Personally, I hope she runs for the House or the Senate after she rests for a while. But regardless of what she does or doesn’t do, she helped us know what it means to be and think like a true progressive.

DEAR MS. SHEEHAN; I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS TO BRING AN END TO THIS MADNESS. SOME AMERICANS MIGHT PREFER TO CONTEMPLATE AMERICAN IDOL BUT SOME OF US HAVE OTHER
PRIORITIES. YOUR EFFORTS ARE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU AGAIN. MARY TULLOCH

    Dear Cindy,

Rest, recover, and be well. You've earned it and the respect of many, many people.

You'll be missed and I hope we'll see you in the trenches before too long. You've made a remarkable journey and left us a legacy that I pray we live up to.

    With respect and in solidarity,

    Laura Bonham

Cindy, Thank you for getting me off my couch and into the street. As you know, a friend dragged me to Camp Casey in August, 2005, and my life has not been the same since. Thank you for being the spark I needed to change my life and go from being worried about my country to actually believing I have the power to change it.

I love you, Cindy, and I know our paths will cross again soon.

    Peace!
    Anne
  • Dear Cindy,
Thank you for all your frustrating work for peace. It was not in vain. You woke up a lot of Americans to the tragedy of the illegal war and occupation. You made a huge difference and I am in awe of your courage and conviction to ask the questions out loud .... the questions people were afraid to ask. You did something the democratic leadership was unable to do ....you made the news! Even Fox news! Suddenly, because of your tenacity and ability to communicate, the masses had an idea of what was going on and were motivated to make a stand, ending the silence of the status quo. You have been a formidable "Power of One".... Cindy Sheehan, who the world has come to know and respect.
I understand your need to regroup and be with your loved ones and wish you well. I am sure your son Casey is very proud of you for all the stands and sacrifices you have made on his behalf and his fellow men and women in uniform.

I just want to send a huge Thank you not only to Cindy for all she's done for all of us and our country, but also to all of Cindy's friends and family that have also put their lives on hold to help with the movement behind the scenes to keep things goin. Thank you All!

You are a remarkable woman and you should be very proud of yourself for your courage and stamina. Thank you for being the role model for a real patriot. I salute you.
  • Jim Herndon
Cindy, I am one of the working poor who cannot take time off from work but I thank you for all you've done. Sorry I couldn't be out there in the trenches with you. This government is the major terrorist organization in the world. It would take a peace movement of Biblical proportions to change things. And, that ain't gonna happen!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are a good person. You have stood by your beliefs and continue to do so. It was a national sadness the day the House approved the blank check. It has swept beyond our nation but is not forgotten. Now it is a sadness mingled with all the hope you inspired for these years. Peace, Cindy. You will always be a hero of good.

God Bless you, Cindy. Thank you for standing against the insanity that has swept America. Thank you for giving hope to all of us who saw through the evil insanity from the start. I honor your courage to share you anguish with the world and transform it into resistance. You'll always be one of the few heros to me. Your voice rang clear and true in one of America's darkest hour. Sen. Byrd said, 'it's all about oil'. Jon Stewart never let us forget that it is indeed an evil insanity. Al Gore reminded the Democrats what true patriotism is. Heros few, heros all. America, and indeed, the world, and history too, all owe you more than words can say. You'll always be a hero to me. God Bless you.
  • We had the distinct pleasure of being with Cindy on a number of occasions here in Ohio. On March 26th 2006 at our Organize and Mobilize the Progressive Vote, we of PDA also had the honor of hosting Cindy in her first trip to Ohio. Close to 500 people packed the library in Akron that day, and though we had a future senator, a future congressperson and a present congressperson, grassroots groups from around the state, and the Democratic State Party Chair there, I suspect the majority of those present came out to hear what Cindy had to say. Again, later in the year at the US Labor Against the War event we had an opportunity to spend time with Cindy, who we now consider a friend, and just recently at the May 4th commemoration of the shootings as Kent State we again had time to see her and share some time together.

The right-wing media tried to paint Cindy as some ogre form the fringe. They failed. To qoute a song and dance man, "if the arrow is straight, and the point is slick, it will pierce the dust no matter how thick." The dust of the lies have been blown away by those who know and love Cindy for who she is and what she has done to galvanize the Peace Movement.

We from the reality-based wing of the American experience got to see Cindy up close and see her for who she is. She is a person who exudes simplicity (in the old, positive sense of the term that is being lost) and compassion. She speaks from the heart (to the heart) and never wavered in her desire to see a peaceful solution to the injustice of this occupation.

We in Ohio remain with you Cindy no matter your path. You path meeting ours has made us better, more resolved, and more appreciative of all the others we meet along the way to make a more just and saner world. May you be happy in all things. You are our sister and friend always.

Thanks Cindy, you have been unfairly slandered for standing up for all the parents who lost children (and the children and love ones who lost people) in this illegal invasion and those who stand to lose children, parents, siblings and love ones. Thanks to the Progressive Democrats for standing up to the mainstream of the Party of Thomas Jefferson who can't stand the heat on their failure to do what they were send to Washington to do.
  • Cindy, your assessment of the Democratic Party is 100% correct. Most Democratic leaders have sold us out. Kucinich and Waters only have two votes in Congress. Democrats.com is looking for new candidates to oust the current group of muddled thinking Democrats. Those who have watched the process don't know whether to hope or give up.

A great many peace activists are watching the nomination for President to see if the Democratic Party will redeem itself. If the Democratic Party cares about the American people, it will nominate Dennis Kucinich for President. If not, most Democrats won't vote or won't vote Democrat.

I think the slate of Presidential contenders is indicative of where the Democratic Party is coming from. Edwards and Obama has strong ties to Wal-Mart, predatory lending and Sudan. Both have voted in support of the death penalty, Yucca Mountain, nuclear and oil corporation, the war, war profiteering, USA-PATRIOT, and other terrible causes. Both have pretended to stand for the opposite of what they stand for. While Edwards (the candidate with the worst environmental record of any candidate the Democrats have ever considered) has his campaign people parked in an environmental non-profit collecting funds, Obama is involved with indicted alleged mobster Tony Rezko and is allegedly conducting campaign business out of his Congressional office. The dishonesty of these two could make for lots of late night talk show jokes if either is nominated.

It is rather frightening that, after Kucinich, Gavel and Dodd, Clinton is the most liberal candidate. Like Richardson, Obama, and Edwards, she is connected to the Trilateral Commission, the group that profits from a corporate-owned world. It is because of the corporations, particularly the oil corporations that we are in this war.

Pelosi was purchased a long time ago. Young Americans have been screaming about her anti-youth bigotry for years. They believe she wants to send them all to die in war before there first vote. Her Congresssional record shows support for banning youth from the Internet, strip searching children, and sending the young to die (just like they pointed out) before their first vote. AIPAC has given her $63,000. She, Edwards and Obama proudly speak to AIPAC in pro-war speeches (with Edwards talking about putting Israel into NATO). The people of San Francisco want her out. She runs unopposed in her primaries and that is why she is still in Congress. Cynthia McKinney has been asked to move to San Francisco to unseat her in her next primary.

In short, the Democratic Party is a complete mess. I hope your comments will wake up sleeping Democratic leaders and organizations who are to pay more than lip-service to support for the causes they pretend to support.

    Dear Cindy,

Thank you for your efforts and especially for the devotion you have demonstrated. Do not worry about those who disagree with your fight. Shining a light on our dismal "two-party" system which is so good at keeping a narrow range of status quo is correct.

Thank you for your courage in confronting Bush and everything he stands for. I admire you and hope that you know your efforts were not wasted. I know our founding fathers would be more than discouraged with the apathy of our citizens. Shame on all Americans who are cheerleaders for the Military-industrial insanity.

Thank you Cindy for all you have done to bring peace & justice to this world!

When your son Casey was killed in the illegal Iraq War you took a strong stand to bring it to an end. You actually camped outside of Bush's house & jump started the whole movement. We organized Camp Casey's all across the country in support of your courageous action.

We support you in whatever decision you make regarding the "peace movement" but we want you to know we love you and appreciate everything you have done!

You have been a tremendous inspiration to everyone truly seeking a world of peace with justice.

You are a real American hero!

    Cindy,

Please take good care of yourself. You have done all you can. It is enough. The battle is not over, but the rest of us, whom you energized and whose conscience you pricked, will take it from here. Please take good care of yourself.

  • Cindy,
What you have given the world will continue to effect us all. There is something razor sharp about a mother's loss of a child that you were able to translate into clear words and direct actions which reverberated with all mothers and grandmothers across the globe. I thank you for that ability to move grief into the kind of inspiring action you embodied. When you were with us in Western Mass in March I felt your weariness, and am truly glad that you are stepping back. In an odd way, by doing this, you continue to inspire us all to work harder, knowing that your exhaustion was a result of all the good work you did for the great turning that we all aspire to. Would that we all could give as you have! In Buddhism, it is said that once we reach the ground of hopelessness, we can begin to grasp our true path. Given what I know of you, I believe you will be moving on to a new and strong phase in your life.
We in PDA and around the peace movement send you our love and blessings,
    Susie Patlove

    Cindy........

I've written before....though never expected a return email. Your pain, love, caring, dispair, and unimaginable loss will never be forgotten. As time goes on we begin to realize that the loss of any and all trust from our political leaders seems to harm just as greatly as any loss of life. Why? Because we realize that it will happen again by these same treasonists that administer justice and war from terrorists like Alberto Gonzales, Dick Cheney, and the puppet. The calculated hatred for American Citizens and the US Constitution by this current administration has inspired me to never, never, never, never, never, never, never give up.

Ever thought who our National leaders will be after this current group of political pretenders are swept away? There is one typing to you right now.

Do your homework on who I am. My solutions are detailed and 100% effective on any and every topic.

I am a self described "agressive compassionate" in terms of political affiliation or party name. What does agressive compassionate mean? If there had been military blocking the way out of New Orleans and refusing to allow citizens to escape from the flooding behind them because "they didn't want their kind here" like they did to the residents of New Orleans.....I would have ordered every one of those men and women to stand trial for TREASON. If they didn't come forward I would place the entire military under arrest until they did. That is an aggressive compassionate.
  • Cindy, you continue to inspire so many of us to speak out and be active. I just came across an obscure website with a wonderful anti-war song inspired by you, "speaking out for those we sent to fight", called Busy Makin' Money at www.burlsheldon.com. Thank you.
