Rep. Grijalva to Attend Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva will join the Rep. John Lewis (D-GA.) and other Members of Congress for the 2007 Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama.

The 2007 Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage is an invitation to Members of Congress to gather across racial, party, and religious lines for a journey to historic sites in Alabama with those who shaped the Civil Rights Movement.

A three-day tour, Members of Congress will stop in the cities of Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham, Alabama to deepen the understanding of a crucial chapter in our nation’s history and offer opportunities for engaged and reflective dialogue.

“It is important to remember what has happened in the history of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Rep. Grijalva. “Many people dedicated their lives in this struggle to improve the lives of others. As a community, we must all work to eliminate divisiveness, work to increase mutual understanding and pass this message onto our children. It is my hope that the youth of our nation will then educate others and create alliances to help establish changes that promote racial justice and harmony between all races”.

Since 1998, under the guidance of Rep. Lewis, The Faith & Politics Institute has led seven bipartisan Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimages to Alabama, affording over 100 members of the U.S. House and Senate an experiential journey through the history of the U.S. Civil Rights movement.
