Rep. Jim McGovern

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) has proven his leadership and vision on the issue of extricating our troops from Iraq through HR 4232. He will be reintroducing The Safe and Orderly Withdrawal Act this week, with some modifications. PDA has been proud of our association with Rep. McGovern and his message that it is our obligation to protest this war and to lead in our local communities. He reaffirms the importance of PDA and challenges us to take a larger role in shaping the future of this country. Your comments are welcome by e-mailing Tony at tony@pdamerica.org

  • Thanks again Tony for a great interview with Rep McGovern.
Wish we had more Rep. like Jim McGovern's in Washington.
    He is the real deal!

    Jim is the best congressman.
  • Please Stop War! and I agreed with Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA)
  • The Congress need to follow Rep Jim McGovern's advice. I support HR4232.

I want to say thank you to both of you for your speaking out, but I must say I am appalled at the fact that so many people KNOW FOR A FACT the last 2 presidential elections were stolen and are walking on eggshells rather than broach the subject. People who fixed the election for the republican party have come forward and testified to it in front of the federal election committee. I cannot believe this man is being allowed to continue this sham as if he knew what he was doing. Until the funding that has gone to this war is accounted for I don't think another penny should be given. Is this government so corrupt that it is considered acceptable for these crimes to continue? Is it just another day in the white house? No big deal. I have so little confidence in our supposed leaders anymore, I can barely listen to another word from any of them. Action speaks louder than words. That is what I want to see. And as far as conspiracy theory goes...as soon as anyone questions anything, they are regarded as conspiracy theorists. Wake up America. How do you think we came to be? Don't you want to know the truth? How many times a day do you find out things that turned out not to be true? Well, just put that on a much bigger scale with much bigger lies. Now you're getting it. Thanks for letting me vent.
  • Please stop this unjust, unethical, immoral and ILLEGAL war!
  • Paul H Jenkins
I support HR4232. Rep Jim McGovern’s has the right idea, the right path to follow. We need to find the exit door, we need to end the needless blood letting of both our troops and the Iraqie people. Pull the plug and start bring them home. We need to fund the best and stronger port and border security. We need to fund stopping them from getting us here, not killing our troops there.

Listening to Rep. Jim McGovern gave me some insight into a question that I keep puzzling over having to do with why more of the Democratic leadership isn't solidly in favor of impeachment proceedings. He says here that he supports stopping the war on George Bush's watch, since Bush is the guy who got us into the war. As we all know, the war will have repercussions for whatever administration follows as well as for all of us. But not wanting to see George Bush completely dethroned until the war is stopped might be a reason for some curious reluctance on the part of Dems (including Rep McGovern who didn't mention anything about it) to allow a man who has so blatantly broken the law starting with stealing not one but 2 elections, lied about reasons for war, allowed unwarranted wire tapping of American citizens, excepted himself from the law through over 700 presidential signings, etc. We should not even be having to hear such a criminal be addressing us tonight on the state of the Union in just 4 minutes. He should be under arrest by now and many many of us know that, including some of our representatives. Yet, like the naked Emperor, George Bush still parades around not only with the trappings of power, but the actual authority to escalate troops in Iraq, alienate important powers in the Middle East, refuse to sign the Kyoto accords or even acknowledge the legitimacy of global warming/climate change, much less hold us accountable for our contributions to an impending disaster that makes terrorism seem almost friendly. So while I completely admire the directness with which Rep McGovern addresses the need to withdraw our troops, I believe the kind of courage he's exhibiting here must go hand in hand with the courage to stop George Bush in every way possible from being able to use the presidency to continue making daily decisions about our future.
  • I agree with Judy above, why are our CongressPeople acting so strange? It feels like we are being sold out. Not talk and talk. Nothing is progressing on Iraq, the smell of blood is in the air. Stop the killling, bring our troops home and stomp on the Neo-cons. No pussyfooting, no games. This is real. We are in real danger. Stop it now. Just fight the good fight.

I cannot fathom why the charade continues or why all those people continue showing Bush and Cheney respect that they neither show toward them or us and that they clearly do not and have not ever deserved from anyone. Unelected dictators in charge of this country --two known draft dodgers (and not the kind who took a stand, but the kind who hid behind 5 deferrments/went AWOL for over a year, both hiding behind their Daddy's money) having the utter gall to launch an unprovoked war and then refusing to end the occupation in the middle east -- is unthinkable; yet here we are and there they are, doing just that.

Clearly there will be no progress in the right direction until these criminals are treated as such instead of being treated as though they are respectable, and elected, leaders. Until they are both impeached, indicted, prosecuted, and incarcerated for the horrendous damage they have done to this country -- to US -- Bush and Cheney will continue to run amok starting more wars in the worst of all possible areas of the world to start them in, in their insatiable greed and lust for absolute power -- the power of fascist dictators, which is all they really are.

Unless we insist that they be tried for their crimes and held accountable for them all, just like any other criminal in America would be -- except O.J. Simpson, of course --we can expect absolute disaster to come of allowing them to continue disregarding, disrespecting, and damaging America, the Constitution, the citizens of America and the world. The world will find it impossible to ever forgive us for allowing them to continue in their usual manner, profiteering off war and oil, and leaving a longer and longer trail of death and destruction in their wake. It might even include us all.

STOP THE MADNESS: GET THEM OUT NOW.
  • Kudos to both Senator Kennedy and Representative McGovern (HR-4232) for putting the issue of peace versus Bush's bellicose plea, for another failed escalation of hostilities in Iraq, into proper political perspective. There is no wriggle room here, and as the 110th Congress will verify after the populist Jan 27th March on Washington, the American people desire an immediate end to this unnecessary war and definitely, absolutely no way will we stand for an escalation of troops to enter Bush's debacle in the desert.
Many of us with gray on our roofs, experienced firsthand how to unplug a futile and useless war on countless occasions; the late war in Viet Nam, and the little dirty low intensity wars against our American neighbors in El Salvador, Nigaraqua, Honduras and Guatemala. I urge any and all Americans to help unplug this insane folly of Bush to march on Washington on January 27th to bring the mandate for peace home and into the portals of power. End the war in Iraq now! Cut all funds to a corrupt administration who should be in pre-trial detention and not begging for one more go at war in Iraq.
We should all stand up to defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, who weaken its strength by waging war without the consent of the governed.
See you in Washington on January 27th. Let's unplug this war the old fashioned way, with boots on the ground in D.C.
    Forward! March!

Thanks for providing a chance to add comments. I wish I cold join the demonstration in D.C., but in stead I urge you to push this legislation through Congress so this demonical war can end.

Bush and Cheney based their case for attacking Iraq on evidence they knew was contrived. Many were the voices, like Scott Ritter's, that did not believe that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. Many knew there was no connection with al-Quaeda. Yet Bush and Cheney, with the complicity of various media outlets, notoriously Fox News, cowed many in Congress to give assent to what would clearly be the worst foreign policy distaster in our history. Through arrogance and incompetence, through disregard for the foundational principals of American democracy, through contempt for diplomacy and international accords, they have created in Iraq the worst scenario one could imagine. They have led us into checkmate. Another, more pragmatic administration could perhaps engage the UN and the Arab League to assist in stabilizing Iraq (if such is even possible which I doubt) while US troops redeploy. But this administration hasn't the courage to admit the depth of its errors nor the diplomatic cache to persuade other nations to help. What is left to do but withdraw? The "Surge" will only result in a surge in the death toll. Preventing further death of American troops is about the most we can do. My heart goes out to the Iraqi people. I am ashamed of my country. I hope Congress will do something to turn that around but "courage" and "politician" are two words that are not usually strung together much anymore.

Thanks to Jim McGovern for his leadership. I support HR 4232. It is time to take the moral highground and do the right thing, i.e., get out of Iraq, pay reparations, encourage Iraq's neighbors to enter a dialogue. I believe we must remove all of our bases in the middle east and allow only humanitarian, non military aid. We must stop supporting Israli aggression against the Palestinians. If we are not supporting the Israelis to build the 30 foot wall around Palestinian towns and villages in the West Bank and Gaza, stealing their agricultural land and water, and placing new illegal settlements on their land. bulldozing their olive trees and homes, even the Israelies would have to come to a fair, agreement, acceptable to both parties. If not, then the world community could make the entire Holy Land a Protectorate without either an Israeli or Palestinian government and everyone would have the same rights and world citizenship. • I am a WWII disabled U.S. Army veteran suggesting that we begin a wrting-campaign to as many of our friends/familiy in support of Rep Jim McGovern’s HR4232 as a vehemently strong-protest of Bush/Cheney war, in addition-to rattling Congress's cage to begin immediate action in impeachment-proceedings against 2-of America's #1 traitors: Bush/Cheney, bring-about rock/solid indictments against-then, impose stiff-fines on these mendacious-traitors, combined-with them serving stern prison-terms for @-least the same amount-of-time as that of their illegally brutal-war daily-carnage inflicted upon our precious children serving in Iraq plus the 100's of thousand innocent Iraqi civilians and, the savage daily-bombings of irreparable infrastucture-destruction upon that nation

It is immoral, it is obscene, it is inhumane, therefore America's perpetraor-Bush/Cheney-team must be brought to JUSTICE ...ASAP

Bravo Jim for your strong 'back-bone-approach', we all should emulate your wise efforts in a display of our allegiance in protecting our once sacred American principles

I find it almost impossible to believe Bush and Cheney haven't been arrested and removed from office. Surely, there is enough evidence regarding at least one of all the criminal acts they've committed to do this. They no longer have the right to be in office much less continue to escalate war in the world. While Americans and Iraqis die needlessly every day, legislators dither about how to deal with the situation. HR4232 is the most comprehensive plan that I've seen and I can't believe the entire congress hasn't implemented it by now. I've already let my legislators know that I won't vote for any of them if they don't vote to cut off funds, and support HR4232. If they are unable to do this, I'm willing to join the first wave of Americans who are willing to meet in D.C. to walk peacefully into the White House (yes, in spite of troops and police)and occupy it until Bush, Cheney and the cabinet step down. Perhaps that possibility will move legislators to find the means to put a lid on Bush and Cheney before Americans have to do it for them.

War is Just a Racket: Take a Stand; Dismantle the War Machine; Demilitarize the World!

    Petition at URL: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/77401...

    Summary:

In the words of a USMC General, war is the oldest, the most profitable and the most vicious racket—one in which the profits are measured in dollars and the losses in body bags.

To stop the war racketeers profiting from wars and to void their ‘license to mass murder,’ we the undersigned call on you, the world community, parents, writers, poets, artists, farmers, workers, academics, professionals and all other concerned individuals to rise up and take a stand against the insanity of militarism forced on your community.

Take control of your destiny. Help bring about an end to the manufacture and sales of weapons in your country and the world. Redirect your national income from feeding the war machine to provide food, shelter, health, education and harmony for all.

Remember: Without your consent, explicit or implied, the wheels of the military machine would come to a grinding halt.

This was back on January 22 and nothing has changed ...nothing. Hundreds more are dead. Thousands more innocent Iraqi men, women and children slaughtered..while we continue talking. Are we really this helpless to make our reps listen to us? Are we just wasting our time??? Why is this congress, with the power to stop this madness, still funding this war????
