We are packing it in for tonight

This whole race in Illinois has become the poster child for how totally screwed up electronic voting is.  There are something like 200 precincts in Cook County that won’t get counted until tomorrow, so odds are the Cegelis race won’t be called one way or the other until then.  We have nothing to say to the media at this point, and the candidate is calling it a night.

Keep an eye on the links I provided below to keep track of this thing. I am not sure what my situation will be tomorrow regarding blogging; I have plane tickets back to Boston slated for tomorrow afternoon, but may push that back if this thing continues to be wacky.

In the meantime, it is time to take a break.  Watch the wires, keep your fingers crossed, and remember: this is what electronic voting looks like in the raw, bleeding flesh.  In Illinois, you have to pay $75,000 to get a recount, even with these kind of amazing foul-ups.  This is the future of democracy, and that future is both grim and prohibitively expensive.

That being said, the Cegelis campaign sure put a charge of red-hot pepper up the backside of the Democratic Party establishment tonight.  They outspend us by orders of magnitide, had the whole machine on their side, and we took them right down to the wire.  Victory comes in many forms.

Signing off.
